Indigo Dreaming Through the Mother’s House and Burial of the Chiefs

Indigo Dreaming Through the Mother’s House and Burial of the Chiefs builds a matriarchal monument exploring memory and nostalgia. The story of Nana Yaa Asantewaa is interwoven with stories from Richardson’s grandmother and her sewing room with the documentation of the artist’s research in Ghana during the 400 year anniversary of the Transatlantic Slave Trade and the beginning of 2020. Nana Yaa Asantewaa was a Ghanaian Queen Mother who fought against British colonization of Ghana during the Asante War of the Golden Stool in 1900. 2021 marked the 100 year anniversary of her death. An artifact belonging to Richardson’s great grandmother serves as a portal through time and place. Passing through the burial place of Yaa Asantewaa, Richardson reflects on the presence of ancestors as well as the relationship between mother and daughter. 2020 and 2021 marking a year of pandemic and social unrest, Richardson addresses ideas of connection, care, refuge, and resilience.
